Kratom Side Effects: Headaches and Migraines

F1

Kratom is a natural remedy that has become very popular among its users. It has been used for many generations by many cultures in Southeast Asia as a remedy for different conditions ranging from depression and anxiety, to a lack of energy. While kratom is used as a remedy for different issues, there are some uncomfortable side-effects like headaches. So, in this article, we will examine how kratom headaches occur and how you can find relief from them.

Why Do These Headaches Occur?

Kratom is derived from kratom leaves, which are dried up and ground into powder that can be ingested, put into capsules or brewed into kratom tea. There are three main kinds of kratom, white, red and green veined, and within these kinds are several sub-varieties that get their name from their origin. Every kratom has different effects; some of them are energy and euphoria, relief from anxiety, sedation, and relief from diarrhea, pain relief and relaxation. Kratom effects vary depending on the variety and dosage. Active elements that are found in kratom are known as alkaloids and have an analgesic effect.

The cause of headaches due to kratom can vary. Some people experience tension headaches from varieties of kratom that are more stimulant and some people can experience sinus or facial headaches. Others may develop a kratom migraine or a hangover-type of headache. So, let’s take a look at some of the primary causes of kratom headaches and migraines.

Maeng Da and Thai Kratom Headaches

These two varieties of kratom, Thai and Maeng Da, carry a high risk of causing a headache. They are both known for their stimulating effects and they can bring about some muscle tension. This type of headache is usually described as tension headache and it seems like these headaches are exclusively caused by high dosages. In this case, the cure is simply taking a lower dosage, because it will lessen the stimulating effect and reduce the muscle tension that is usually the root of these headaches. You can also relieve these headaches by massaging the shoulders, neck and the base of the skull. You can even take some counter pain relievers shortly after kratom.

Kratom Migraines: Causes and Cures

The causes of kratom migraines are not exactly known. It is known that the changes in the chemistry of the body can cause migraines. The ones who experience kratom migraines are the ones who are already predisposed to experiencing severe headaches. Trying a different variety of kratom can be helpful, because every variety is unique and altering the dosage can also be helpful. One of the cures for kratom headaches is drinking a lot of water after taking your dosage.

Sometimes, after taking kratom, light headed sensations can happen, and many people confuse this with headaches. This is most often caused by taking a powerful and large dosage. The best solution is to take a smaller dosage or to try a different variety that will deliver the same effect as the previous one, but at a lower dosage.

I know this was almost a year ago, but i too get horrible headaches from maeng da. I found o.p.m.s silver Malay special reserve gives a little less energy, but more feeling of well being without a headache! For me it’s now my fave. Going to try Bali next for pain. Good luck to you!

Currently in hour 6 of my Kratom migraine. I very, very rarely will suffer from a migraine and haven’t had one in a very long time. Last night had knee pain that wouldn’t go away, so I took my usual effective dose of 8 capsules. I usually take the green strain Maeng Da, this time I took a white vein Thai. This has not been a fun day. I ended up going to bed in a dark room and it still didn’t help. I’ll stick to my usual strain going forward.

I checked other sites and apparently it has to do with severe dehydration and a higher dose than needed. Here I find it’s also the strain… Okay, getting the elements together to avoid these nasty headaches. Mine are sinus related, plus tension related. I know it’s lack of water because I feel really thirsty through the night and I tried to compensate to have water by the bedside, I need to drink water through the day, or it’s not enough. I use a spray bottle in my nose with saline and that helps with the sinus headaches. Also a bit of salt to hold the water in helps to recover.

I’m having severe headaches, just went to the ER last night and had a CT scan. It’s probably the white (15-20 g’s daily) it’s happening on one side.

The past few weeks I have been experimenting with taking kratom for the first time. I weigh about 90kg, and started off by taking a dose of 3g, noting the effects, and increasing the dose by 1 g on each successive trial, leaving 2-3 days between each dosing-period. Yesterday, I tried 10g of red borneo leaf-powder simmered in 1 c water for 20 min, and strained through a cloth before drinking. I followed this by 1/2 c of orange juice. This dose- like 8g and 9g before it- had excellent analgesic effects (I suffer from chronic pain following an accident), mild sedative effects, and only weak euphoria. It was similar to taking 1/2 tablet of vicodin in pain-management, but without the limiting side-effects. However, 6 hours post-dosing, I suddenly experienced a severe cluster-type headache. I took 600mg of ibuprofen to combat it. Obviously, this dose was too high for me, so I will keep it below this. Dosage is very important, and I recommend to new users to start off slowly with a low dose of 2-3g max.

I have had frequent headaches caused by taking a larger dosage. I have had them the last 2 weeks. Im a huge supporter of kratom just dont over do it because the migraine headaches are terrible. Take recommend dosage and dont over do it.

every strain that i have taken (from various sources) have all given me headaches, but i just assumed that it was due to the fact that i was previously taking suboxone and i still had to rid it from my brain (i was on suboxone for way too long when i found out aboot kratom..now i have basically stopped suboxone and will be taking kratom for the on going pains that started all of my mess)

I haven’t had a headache in about a year. .. first day taking kratom -5 hours after, BAM!

It could be something else I don’t want to post here, but even if it is from the kratom ( and I’m thinking it was as I confused teaspoons and tablespoons and believe I took too much for a first dose) I’m not going to let that deter me from using it therapeutically again.

I just figured I’d post my two cents because I read a couple of other propaganda product placement pages and message boards / forms that claimed you do not get headaches from kratom.

As someone who hasn’t had a headache in a very long time I am going to wager you can!

I also get a headache from white md or white thai. I had indomethacin on hand, which I take when I normally take a headache, and when I took it shortly after having Kratom, I had a very bad (and scary) reaction. So word of warning- don’t take Indomethacin and Kratom together, or within a couple of hours of each other.

If you drink alcohol with kratom you will get a horrible headache nearly impossible to get rid of besides sleep.

I take 2-4 capsules of the Bali Gold at a time, once a day. I always get headaches. I get all 3 in one. The tension headache, the facial and temples headache, and the migraine is the result of all of it. If it didnt relieve my rheumatoid pain so well, I wouldn’t take it all. I’m trading one pain for another. Although, tonight it isnt helping me at all. My RA is still hurting and now I’ve got the headaches. I’ll definitely be calling in to work tmrw.
